There's this awesome site I found where people (and you!) can make text adventure or choose-your-own adventure style games, for free. It's open source, and their web-based tool is really cool, but kinda complicated. Anyway, in addition to making games, you can play all the ones that other people have made, and rate them.

Enjoy!

But soon, the reason you can see the room around you and how the text adventure relates to that becomes clear.
Each subsequent level has its own twist or two on the setting and old electronics within, making for some of the most unique, eerie adventure gaming out there.
Yet the drama really comes from her relationships, from the genuinely difficult choices to make, and the clunkily-written but still efficient coming of age story at its heart.
Frictional responded with Soma, building on its horror heritage, but putting the scares into an endlessly more complex, beautiful, and somehow even more claustrophobic environment.

Keep your eyes peeled!
Even so, digging through the tale by searching for keywords and clips and piecing together the order for yourself is as compelling as any detective fiction.
To the Moon is one of the best recent examples, focusing on regret and hope and lost memories in reverse in an anachronistic order.
Just the story of a man, Henry, escaping his life by taking a job watching for fires in Wyoming, and the relationship he develops with his boss, Delilah.
At least, to begin with.
Some of the mystery that follows is opinion-splitting material, but Campo Santo nails both the loneliness and the camaraderie of being vulnerable and isolated in even mostly-safe situations.
Even when the thriller part fades, the exquisite character piece remains.
A very absorbing take on the genre.

That multi-decade lifespan has produced some of the most astounding titles, so it is certainly a struggle to narrow down a list of the best adventure games.
Adventure games have prospered thanks to a focus on story and character.
That, and a few tricky brain teasers, as opposed to violence set the genre apart.
Characters usually get by through talking or thinking instead of resorting to fighting — though, Full Throttle protagonist Ben might have a few things to say about that.
We frequently return to our lists to make sure they are as up-to-date as possible and represent the very best the genre has to offer, so you can be confident that what we list below are nothing less than classics.
Dialogue, character, world, and imagination cement Grim Fandango among the best adventure games.
It is a cleverly-realised world with film noir influences and a big dollop of crime and corruption.
The game stars some of the finest characters ever written, including protagonist Manny Calavera, who must try to save Mercedes Colomar, the woman he thinks he wronged.
The often obtuse puzzles can derail the pacing, but just exploring and interacting with this beautiful world https://polezno-no-vredno.website/adventure-games/game-pvz-adventure.html up for these irritants.
His burning desire to become a swashbuckling pirate and win the heart of governor Elaine Marley is noble.
The problem is he is utterly inept, has more confidence than ability, and is a dab hand at ruining lives.
He is also being hunted by the zombie pirate LeChuck, whose ghost he killed in the first game.
Elaine, understandably, wants nothing to do with him.
The result is a game with dialogue that is witty and regularly laugh-out-loud, its situations wildly memorable think back to the spitting contest, the skeleton dance, or the mardi gras fish fryand puzzles that, while challenging, are always amusing.
Monkey Island 2 is the peak of the outrageous comedy adventure and one of the best adventure games on PC.
They do not come funnier than this, and the Special Edition somehow makes this point-and-click game even better with pitch-perfect voice acting, painted backgrounds, and a remastered soundtrack.
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Imagine Uncharted without the jumping and shooting, sporting a plot that hints at what an interesting Dan Brown novel might be like, and you will have a reasonable picture of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars.
Like the Monkey Island series, it is difficult to decide which of the first two titles is best, but, in this case, the first game just edges it.
The story is great, and developers Revolution keep the tone light despite a smattering of darker moments.
Thanks to sterling writing and voice acting, Broken Sword remains one of the best adventure games on PC.
Self-awareness is half the battle, at least.
Discworld Noir When you think of the Discworld series the first two games will likely come to mind.
Starring Eric Idle as Rincewind the wizard, they were both, well, terrible.
But what secures the game a place among the best adventure games is a pair of remarkably clever systems.
But these musings are more than just memory aids: he can use them like inventory items, combining them to create more detailed thoughts to get closer to the truth — solving puzzles in the process.
It is so smart it is astonishing that more games have not ripped it off.
Oh, and he can turn into a werewolf.
In this form, Lewton can see the world through smell, which is as clever as it is surprising when it happens.
Unfortunately Discworld Noir is the only game on this list that is not available digitally.
Even if you find a copy it is damn hard to run on modern PCs.
We optimistically tried it on Windows 10 and it crashed immediately after the opening cutscene.
Such a best text adventure games ever already exists, of course, and it is called Beneath a Steel Sky.
While Revolution founder Charles Cecil originally intended to adapt Watchmen with the assistance of Gibbons, we are glad the project did not pan out.
Instead, they collaborated on this classic point-and-click game.
Hand-drawn cutscenes, gorgeous pixel art, and the tale of Robert Foster and his attempts to escape from the dystopian Union City.
The atmospheric world is influenced by the likes of Blade Runner, Judge Dredd, and Mad Max, and thematically explores societal oppression and corruption.
It is a bleak Orwellian nightmare with… fart jokes.
Revolution ensure that what could have been a depressing slog is, instead, a deeply entertaining point-and-click adventure game.
The plot twists, wonderful character moments, excellent puzzles, and stylish world all make one of the best adventure games around.
Day of the Tentacle When it comes to puzzles, Day of the Tentacle is best text adventure games ever of the best adventure games you can play.
It is never obtuse or mean-spirited, and that is all the more impressive when article source consider the player is expected to manage three characters over three different time periods, their actions from one affecting the other.
You have to think fourth-dimensionally, as Doc Brown would say, and it is a testament to Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, and the rest of the team that somehow this never feels overwhelming.
Good-hearted lawbreaker Lee and recently orphaned Clementine establish a fiercely loyal bond as they weather an onslaught of tragedies and disasters.
Chief among these is the zombie apocalypse, of course, but the agendas of every survivor they meet both help and hinder the pair, too.
Scenes play out differently, certain characters can survive longer, and Lee can behave like an absolute dick.
The main plot ploughs on but it can feel wildly different depending on who is steering it.
For the shocking end of Episode 4 alone, it is a modern classic of a point-and-click game.
Night in the Woods It is hard not to fall for Night in the Woods.
Developers Infinite Fall packed personal experience, humour, small-town Americana, a creepy conspiracy, stylish visuals, a fantastic soundtrack, and some of the most affectingly real scenes in videogames into one of the best adventure games ever made.
Night in the Woods tackles depression, dysfunctional families, economics, societal pressure, growing up, joblessness, escapism, and death, but in a whimsical and good-natured way that ensures things never become hopeless.
Characters gently poke fun at each other and do anything to distract themselves, no matter how stupid or dangerous.
It might play like a platformer, but there are no heads to jump on, no points to collect, no bosses to defeat or worlds to conquer.
Instead, there are friends to talk to, paths to choose, songs to play, and an awareness of the one shrinking world we all inhabit.
Better make the best of it, then.
Technobabylon Slowly but surely, publishers Wadjet Eye have made themselves the modern kings of the classic-style point-and-click adventure game.
Set in 2087, the city of Newton is run by an AI called Central that sees and controls everything according to an unknown agenda.
The internet has evolved into an addictive virtual cyberspace called the Trance.
A murderer called the Mindjacker is killing mysteriously and with impunity.
Assigned to the Mindjacker case are Charlie Regis and Max Lao, as well as Trance addict, Latha Sesame.
Each illuminate different angles on the story, which unfolds spectacularly in this horrifyingly believable world.
Every puzzle solution makes refreshing real-world sense.
Pull out your in-game phone and Google it.
Call the person who has the key, ask the all-seeing, all-controlling Central to open it for you, best text adventure games ever just kick it down.
Plus, it is cyberpunk, which is always a win in our book.
Main character Max Caulfield is a photography senior, working with classic Polaroid cameras, while everyone else sports expensive top-of-the-range digital gear.
She is immediately endearing, appealingly weird, and… has the ability to rewind time.
You will stick with Max and Chloe until the end of the world.
Samorost 3 Czech developers Amanita Design have produced some of the best adventure games, including Machinarium, Botanicula, and their long-running Samorost series.
Their games are a little different, best text adventure games ever they are entirely dialogue-free.
Instead, symbols and sounds are relied upon to tell the story — and they are unbearably sweet.
Samorost 3 strikes just the right balance between clever puzzle design, gorgeously bizarre looks, and sheer cuteness.
Samorost 3 is about an alien gnome living with his dog on an asteroid.
In his spare time he who discovers a mysterious flute and explores the origins of the cosmos.
Unlike every other point-and-click adventure games on this list, the plot is of secondary importance.
The Samorost series is all about warm, atmospheric visuals, adorable audio, and shockingly smart puzzles.
Playing a Best text adventure games ever game is almost like a pleasant drug trip, we imagine: it is full of inexplicable creatures, mind-boggling locations, and imaginative encounters.
With a gnome instead of a girl.
Chuchel Chuchel is as much a slapstick comedy as it is a point-and-click game.
Chuchel and his chums can drink too much water and urinate on each other.
Your cute critter can even crack open the shell of a sentient egg with a spoon almost four times his own size after a psychedelic trip induced by licking a mushroom.
The playful joy of your endearing misdemeanours is enhanced by the satisfyingly silly boings, zips, and plops, the game emits, imbuing Chuchel with an onomatopoeic quality that makes it one of the funniest and best adventure games on PC.
Thimbleweed Park While Day of the Tentacle is the official sequel to Maniac Mansion, Best text adventure games ever Park — from adventure veterans Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick — feels like the authentic sequel; one where you get to explore the Mansion but also the surrounding area and local town.
The weird, weird town.
Developers Terrible Toybox games adventure free offline mobile Thimbleweed Park looking and feeling authentically retro, with chunky pixel art and huge verb buttons, but cleverly add to the genre, too.
For example, there are random events that may or may not happen as you explore as one of the five playable characters.
Wandering into a deserted alleyway, apropos of nothing, could see a character get abducted.
Then there are more puzzles to solve before you get them back.
The characters are quirky, entertaining, and will stick in your mind for ages-a-reno even if you do not want them too-a-boo.
The clever puzzles can require multiple characters to solve, and they can even have multiple solutions.
Then there is the ending, an audacious denouement that feels like a mic-drop to the entire genre.
Only the creators of Maniac Mansion could get away with it.
You can return to using real world logic for solving your problems from now on, no need to try using every object in your pocket together.

Indy's voice, while not done by Harrison Ford, is surprisingly perfect in this game (CD-ROM version) and arguably even better than Ford's! The 3 games in 1 gimmick, multiple mini games and side trips, well researched and cleverly written historical fiction all make this title near perfect and among the best adventure games of all time. 9.

Lovecraft based "Interactive Fiction" called Anchorhead a couple of years ago.
I still remember it, so I guess that's a pretty good grade for a completely story based game.
It's basically a completely text based adventure game with a strong focus on story.
If you like dark Victorian stuff with a macabre sense of humor then these guys created the deepest game I've ever played in the text based genre.
Back in the day I played Gemstone: Dragonrealms.
Its on subscription status, but it was a great text based MUD I don't know what system you are looking on but any tablet, phone, or from GOG.
It's fairly old and I don't think very well known.
But far and away my favorite text adventure is.
Also if you wanna play something newer check out.
I remember Adventureland on the Commodore Vic 20 was good.
I don't know if there's anyway to play it now though.
Not exactly text based, but maybe check out the Zero Escape series.
Two games in the series so far, one on DS and one on 3DS.
They're considered visual novels, so its a mix of puzzle solving and dialogue choices.
Speaking of which, I once had a similar question about visual novels with a style like Vlad the Impaler, any tips, anyone?
It's a fully ASCII RPG.
In early access on Steam, but has good reviews.
It's coming out of early access shortly.
Im assuming you already know about the text based game app for iphone ipad?
Anything at the top within the list there is fantastic and they are all free and can be played right on your phone through the app A Small Talk At The Back Of Beyond is pretty good.
It's pretty short but has some serious teeth.
I can think of a game that is somewhat text based.
You move around your character and interact click on different parts of the environment to further the story.
AND there are numerous endings and ways to completely fail, which makes for quite an intense game.
It's called I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream.
For some reason, searching good text based games returns this near the top of google.
Plus its late at night and I'm not really thinking straight.
Its not intended to be.
I'm pretty sure it does have a mature audiences warning though.
Apologies : best text adventure games ever : : EDIT: I forgot what that story actually had in it.
I am so sorry.

Sure, text-based games seem like the horse-and-buggy of computer games, especially in this World of Warcraft world. But in its day, Zork and most other Infocom games (notably the Enchanter series, the mystery Deadline, and the game version of Douglas Adams? Hitchiker?s Guide to the Galaxy) were industry leaders and perennial best-sellers.

With such a rich history, best text adventure games ever how many deserve to make a list of all-time greats?
Our previous compilation of top adventures had 20 games listed, but that was nearly ten years old itself.
So what would it be this time?
That leaves far fewer casualties, but some series alone can easily stake a claim to three or four best text adventure games ever />Advertisement With a number in mind, that left one important consideration.
How do you compare games spanning decades of styles and technology?
Is a now-antiquated genre pioneer from best text adventure games ever still a classic today?
Does it need to be?
Do new games have any right to stand alongside their forebears that paved the way and have stood the test of time?
Longevity, innovation, production values, historical relevance?
The answer is: all of the above — or none!
You can debate each choice, each placement, and we hope you will!
Sometimes we even contradicted the site's own reviews.
Agree with our choices?
A little of both, somewhere in between?
Have your say in the reader comments below.
And now, best text adventure games ever get started!
The top 100 Adventure Games!
First up: 100 - 96.
Continued on the next page.
Great idea, i loved the Top 20 list.
Finally, the TOP 100!
It is not only a great adventure game on its own, but it is also one of the best sci-fi games, with an original, developed story and universe.
The game is at least TOP 50 material.
I think the last Top 20 list was in April 2004, so this Top 100 list is long overdue.
Toonstruck is far better than The Dig, for starters, yet precedes it.
Runaway is just tripe not worth revisiting.
I never expected them to end up very high but not at all?
Also imo: Runaway 2 wipes the floor with Runaway 3 whom I consider to be the least good of all installments.
Looks good so far.
Iv played half of these first 10 games and i agree with their positions.
Iv never been a big fan of the dig, despite its nice production click at this page />The puzzles are boring and tedious and the story goes real flat imo.
The atmosphere is nice though and its certainly best text adventure games ever a look for anyone who considers themself an adventure-gamer.
The first snow fell yesterday and now THIS!
I cant believe that 2 of my wishes became true on the same day!
I have to quote the great Homer on this because I am at a loss for words.
And yes, of course I already hate this list but of course when composing a list like this you are like a politician in the sense that you never do it right.
One request: when everything is published, can you then make a list of links to the descriptions of all the best text adventure games ever />Kudos for giving respect to The Dark Eye!
That said, I will very disappointed if there are no Legend Entertainment titles featured.
It would be nice to have the year of release next to each title.
Some great choices on Day 2!
Good to see Laura Bow.
Also, very pleased to see Dark Fall 1 - a classic I only recently played.
The 7th Guest absolutely had to be included on this list.
It was so different and exciting.
Sordy-wordy, the release year is listed in each and every write-up.
Have to give people some incentive to actually read them.
When it gets closer to the top ten or twenty is where my hackles might rise.
While not mainstream or well-known, they fully deserve it.
What a fun feature!
Several of these games bring back fond memories.
List continues to look very good.
Quest for glory 2 is a favorite of mine and would definitely rank better on my list especially if you count the drastic improvement by the agd remakebut still a solid write-up of the game.
So what if nobody agrees with the ranking.
I bet not even the staff members themselves agree with it.
And this is undoubtedly the most interesting part.
QFG is a breed all its own, but clearly as much adventures as RPG, unlike Elder Scrolls or any other RPG series.
It also helps they come from Sierra.
Yay SH: The Awakened made it to the list!
You might wanna review that review though considering you placed right in the middle of 4 star territory.
Plus I think it deserves that extra star.
The further I get the more the ratings drop.
Review scores have nothing to do with this list.
Obviously most best text adventure games ever be highly rated in both, but not all.
The Awakened, for example, was considered at least in part because of its remastered version, which did something no other game has ever done.
Steam just now has an excellent offer of the Frogware Sherlock series including Awakened.
But i think this list is very successful and useful so far.
Agreed, Loom is one of the most unique and wonderful adventure experiences, way ahead of its time.
Now my soul can rest in peace.
I would have liked to see Toonstruck and Loom a little higher.
Also had an option to remove those lines from the FMV sequences and to slow it down on dual core machines so it runs really well on XP.
My favorite games so far are not on the list Also this list is going to help me find out about games I missed to play.
Still I think not even in the top50 is very harsh on such a magnificent and awe inspiring game.
The only linking thing between the two is that they are 3rd person adventures.
Even the gameplay is totally different.
Syberia is uninteractive, ascetic and includes a lot of running, while on the other hand ANB is a crystal clear oppisite: Rich in hotspots, detailed and no running at all.
I really would like to hear an explanation for this recommendation.
